How to obtain the NIE in Spain

The NIE (Foreigner’s Identity Number) is a personal, unique and exclusive number that all foreigners must have for identification purposes: all foreigners in whose favour a procedure is initiated to obtain a document that enables them to stay in Spanish territory other than a visa.

Who needs a NIE number in Spain?

• Any foreigner who becomes resident for tax purposes in Spain needs an NIE number in Spain.
• Any non-resident foreigner buying a property in Spain. If a couple buy a property in Spain together, and register the property in both their names, then both must obtain a NIE number in Spain.
• Anyone who wants to work in Spain or start a business in Spain.

Steps to obtain a NIE in Spain

• Obtain an appointment.
• Fill in form EX-18.
• Pay fee 790 code 012.
• Present a photocopy of the passport of the interested party, the power of attorney document and the DNI of the proxy.
